Prof. David Levy-Faur of Hebrew University encourages his colleagues to take heart: "Do not despair. We are in the midst of a change in the tactics of the struggle. From a civil protest that characterized our actions since 1967, to civil resistance. The goal should be to bring all of the settlers home by the fiftieth year of the occupation, 2017."

Prof. Menachem Hofnung [Hebrew University] suggests that everyone resort to calling the institution at Ariel a "college" even if "the government" decides to approve it as a university.

Prof. Alon Harel of Hebrew U. suggests that Ariel's academicians and degrees be treated as those of "a foreign country."

The Ivory Cartel Circles the Wagons to prevent Competition and Sharing of the Fiscal Loot

The presidents of Israel's universities and one of its larger colleges on Monday petitioned the High Court of Justice to overturn a decision granting Ariel University Center (AUC) official status as a university.

The university heads contend that since the budget committee concluded there was no need for a new Israeli university, AUC should not receive exceptional treatment. Moreover, they argue that Israel's higher education scene has been in crisis for a decade in terms of financing, an issue that has significantly harmed the ability of universities to perform research and other functions at competitive levels internationally.

The petition says the financial crisis has led to brain-drain, with some of Israel's brightest students and researchers choosing to study abroad. It adds that even if the Judea and Samaria council had the jurisdiction to make AUC a university against the position of the Council of Higher Education, the criteria it used were unreasonable.

The petition says the criteria compared AUC only to the goals it created for itself, and not to other Israeli or international universities, and emphasized quantity and a bland list of factors divorced from wrestling with the holistic question of whether AUC really deserved to be a university.

The president of Hebrew University, Prof. Menahem Ben-Sasson, referred to the financial crisis in the academic sphere by saying the state would need to add billions to the budget, both for the entire academic community and for a new university, as the $50 million Steinitz had promised would not be sufficient.

Ben-Sasson also said that if Israel were going to add a new university, at least five other quality schools should be ahead of AUC. He stated that the move had both undermined solidarity among Israeli universities and caused problems for Israeli universities in relation to universities abroad.

AUC responded in a statement accusing the university heads of trying to undermine a decision of Attorney- General Yehuda Weinstein, who ratified the Judea and Samaria council's decision as legal.

The statement slammed the Council of Higher Education as a "cartel" attempting to preserve its hegemony over higher education in Israel and preventing newer institutions from competing in research, pursuing knowledge and receiving budgetary resources.

Peled's book, Palestine in Israeli School Books, supplies the 'academic' 'proof' for Orwellian inversions, brain-washing claims and detracting from the Israeli Education System in general

In an important new book, Palestine in Israeli School Books, Israeli language and education professor Nurit Peled-Elhanan buries the second part of Livni's myth once and for all.

Peled-Elhanan examines 17 Israeli school textbooks on history, geography and civic studies. Her conclusions are an indictment of the Israeli system of indoctrination and its cultivation of anti-Arab racism from an early age: "The books studied here harness the past to the benefit of the … Israeli policy of expansion, whether they were published during leftist or right-wing [education] ministries" (224).

Inculcation of anti-Palestinian ideology in the minds of Israel's youth is achieved in the books through the use of exclusion and absence: "none of the textbooks studied here includes, whether verbally or visually, any positive cultural or social aspect of Palestinian life-world: neither literature nor poetry, neither history nor agriculture, neither art nor architecture, neither customs nor traditions are ever mentioned" (49).

Peled-Elhanan concludes: "The books studied here present Israeli-Jewish culture as superior to the Arab-Palestinian one, Israeli-Jewish concepts of progress as superior to Palestinian-Arab way of life and Israeli-Jewish behavior as aligning with universal values" (230).

While Israeli war crimes are not entirely ignored, the textbooks do their best to downplay or justify massacres and ethnic cleansing.

There is some sloppy editing here, and the academic jargon at times slips into the realm of mystifying. But those quibbles aside, Peled-Elhanan's book is the definitive account of just how Israeli schoolchildren are brainwashed by the state and society into hatred and contempt of Palestinians and Arabs, immediately before the time they are due to enter the army as young conscripts.

Hebrew University - Amiram Goldblum (Dept of Pharmaceutical Sciences) Thinks that Judaism Poses a Greater Threat to Israel than Arab Terror or Iran

Goldblum's glorious expectations of peace from "The Disengagement" have proven false.

1. Any decent participant on this list will agree that the "posting accusation" is ridiculous. No one received such a posting.

2. As for Oslo, it was not signed by Peace Now but by Rabin and Peres, and PN did not even participate in its conception. Personally, I was against Oslo and still am against any attempts to reach agreements with the Palestinians because it is not possible, IMHO, to subjugate and make peace at the same time. I am for unilateral retreat from most of the WB & Gaza, and hopefully open peace talks later, but not as a condition for retreat.

3. In view of recent developments, I think that messianic Judaism is becoming as dangerous to the existence of Israel, if not more, than Palestinian ROR, and certainly more than Iran.

Hebrew University - Makor Rishon Reports on the Illegal Contributions of 'Peace Now' to Barak's Election Campaign in 1999 and Amiram Goldblum's (Dept of Pharmaceutical Sciences) Alleged Participation the Affair

Peace Now, a Non-Profit Organization, is Forbidden to Organize or Provide Funds for a Political Party

Only after he was elected did the close connection between Peace Now and Barak's election headquarters become known, in the context of the nonprofit organizations affair.

Three central Peace Now figures worked very closely with Barak - Janet Aviad and Amiram Goldblum, as the heads of two of the nonprofit groups, and Yuli Tamir, who would later become Minister Yuli Tamir. Peace Now took an active role and was directly involved in Barak's second round headquarters in the final month before the elections. The headquarters, which was compartmentalized from everyone else, was managed by Haim Mandel Shaked.

Someone there came up with the idea of running a secret advertising campaign for Barak, using the figure of the late Yitzhak Rabin.

But there was a problem how to fund such a campaign, which could not be directly associated with Barak's election campaign.

The late great professor Yosef Ben Shlomo, a professor of philosophy at Tel Aviv University, accused Amiram Goldblum (Hebrew University, Dept of Pharmaceutical Sciences) of being an "occupier." According to Ben Shlomo, Goldblum lives in the Jerusalem house that actually belongs to an Arab refugee living in Kuwait. Ben Shlomo wrote on the web site of the Israeli Teachers Union:

Hebrew University - The Criminal Indictment that was Filed Against Amiram Goldblum (Dept of Pharmaceutical Sciences) by the Jerusalem Attorney General

Amiram Goldblum, a founder of "Peace Now," was called before representatives of the State Comptroller in 2001 and questioned regarding a number of political ads that he and his accomplices had placed in the Israeli media (including in the Russian language media), where the financing of these ads was considered suspicious. The ads were placed in an effort to influence voters in the 1999 elections in Israel. Goldblum was suspected of illegal campaign finances among his activities in the NGO 'Citizens from the Right and Left'.

Goldblum refused to answer the questions and a criminal indictment was filed against him at the request of the State Comptroller for refusal to answer questions, a crime that can be punished by up to two years in prison. An indictment was filed by the Jerusalem Attorney General's Office. The Attorney General asked to call Goldblum's own attorney, Avigdor Feldman, as one of the witnesses against him.

Hebrew University - The Israeli Press Council Dismissed Complaint Filed by Amiram Goldblum (Dept of Pharmaceutical Sciences) against INN reporter as frivolous

The Israeli Press Council (http://www.moaza.co.il/BRPortal/br/P102.jsp?arc=27521) recently dismissed as frivolous a complaint filed with it by Amiram Goldblum, a professor of pharmacy at the Hebrew University and a founder of the extremist organization "Peace Now." Goldblum had filed a complaint against journalist Gil Ronen when the latter reported on an internet site about the content of a television news broadcast by Israel's Channel Two. That broadcast concerned the alleged hiring of a convicted Palestinian terrorist to work in the laboratory of Prof. Goldblum. The TV broadcast claimed that Goldblum had made the decision to hire the terrorist out of ideological convictions. Channel Two later retracted the part about Goldblum being the person who made the decision to hire the terrorist in his lab. Goldblum claims unnamed officials at the Hebrew University actually made the decision.

After the partial retraction by Channel Two, the Israelnationanews.com web site, where the Ronen article had appeared, removed it. Nevertheless, years later Goldblum filed a complaint against Ronen with the Israel Press Council. The council, as noted, dismissed the complaint as frivolous.

This is a different perspective. There is no more glorification of the kuffiyeh here, or of anything specifically Arab.

Of course. I mean, it came with Zionism -- they had not conceived of black Jews when they started. But many of the early Zionists came from Eastern Europe, and they were called the "Ost Judden." They were the "Eastern Jews" and they were inferior to the "Western Jews," from Western Europe.

So they westernized themselves when they came, toward the other Jews. The funny thing is, those early Zionists said they perpetuated a western culture, but they had never met a western culture until they came here. The only people who came with Western culture were the Jews from Arab countries, because they studied in French and British schools.

But when Jews came from Arab countries, they had to give up their Arabness -- to give up their culture, their music, their habits, their clothes, their accent. They really worked on that. It is all part of the same racism. It is white supremacy.

Hebrew University Hires Leftist Extremist from the "Yesh Gvul" Organization to serve as its Point Man against Ariel

Well, Kalman Liebskind, the intrepid columnist for Maariv, has a weekend column revealing just how the Hebrew University, one of the two strongest and oldest institutions in the Ivory Cartel, is battling and agitating against the accreditation of Ariel. It seems the Hebrew University, which also led a campaign in 1964 to block accreditation to Bar Ilan University, officially hired a radical anti-Israel leftist extremist to lead its campaign. It commissioned a "report" about Ariel written by Dr. Zeev Rotem, who just happens to be a long-time agitator for the extremist Yesh Gvul organization, an organization financed by all the usual forces of darkness specializing in promoting mutiny and insurrection among Israeli soldiers, especially among those in the air force (see http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?2623-Group-of-Israeli-Pilots-Refuse-to-Carry-Out-Airstrikes ). Yesh Gvul has long led the campaign for soldiers to refuse to serve until the Israeli government adopts the political agenda of the communist party. Rotem used to teach at Tel Aviv University. He likes to accuse Israel of committing indiscriminate murder and atrocities against "Palestinians."

Reprint from 2004:  Hebrew University - When an Israeli Diplomat Trashed an "Art Work" celebrating a Palestinian mass murderer of Jewish children, on display in Stockholm, Hebrew U's Amiram Goldblum denounced the Ambassador

"This was not a piece of art," the ambassador told Sweden's SR radio news station. "It was a monstrosity. For me it was intolerable and an insult to the families of the victims," he said. "As ambassador [of] Israel I could not remain indifferent to such an obscene misrepresentation of reality."

Feiler describes himself as the "eye-bleeding ultimate composer of intifadic and eruptive lung-outs." It turns out his parents were both communist party members in Israel and he was raised on a kibbutz.

What is most interesting about this is how ready much of the Israeli Left has been to denounce the Ambassador for defending Jewish dignity and to defend the anti-Semitic "artist" and his absolute right to produce such obscenity. The Far Leftist daily Haaretz ran an editorial, several Op-Eds and lots of letters to the editor denouncing the Ambassador as a bully and vandal, and defending the piece of "art". They were joined by many others on the Israeli Left. Suddenly "artistic" expression is absolutely protected. Except the theater by the Ambassador is not.

Now, it is interesting to place this sudden absolutism of the Left regarding artistic expression in context. This is the very same Israeli Left that insists that any poster that shows politicians the Left likes in an unflattering manner, such as Yossi Beilin or Yossi Sarid wearing an Arab kafiya, is grounds for prosecution for "incitement". This is the same Left that cheered uncontrollably when Tatiana Suskind, the poor young woman who had made a poster of the Prophet Mohammed as a pig, was sentenced to a long prison term.

Hebrew Univeristy - David Kretzmer (Dept of Law) says that the Levy Report proves that Israel is Apartheid

Arbitrarily rejects the prevailing valid International treaties which have been ignored for 45 years

The Edmond Levy report was written by a Committee established to find a way, if possible, to "legalize" settlements established in the Territories without government approval. While the object of the Committee was to help the government out, adoption of the report's position on the status of the West Bank would have far-reaching consequences that seemed to have escaped the Committee…

The report adopts the old, tired and universally rejected arguments that the West Bank is not occupied territory.

Soon after the war ended in 1967, Palestinians petitioned the Supreme Court challenging acts of the military in the newly-occupied territories. In replying to these petitions the government had to decide what legal regime applied in those territories. It was forced to choose between two possibilities. If it were to regard the territories as part of the State of Israel, not only would Israel be censured by the international community for annexation of territory in breach of international law; it would have to extend political rights to the Palestinian residents of the territories. If the territory were not Israeli territory, it would have to accept the only other known regime for territory conquered in war, namely a regime of belligerent occupation. It chose the latter path. Hence for 45 years the military authorities in the territories have exercised the powers of an occupying power under international law and have defended their actions before the Supreme Court of Israel on the basis of the international law of belligerent occupation.

So there you have it: Accepting the Levy report will mean that all private land requisitioned for military needs must immediately be returned to its owners. The other direct implication is clear. The Levy report complains about inequality between Palestinians and Israelis. It cites Israel's Basic Law. But the real inequality on the West Bank is that the Israeli settlers have political rights in the state that controls their lives and the Palestinians do not. That is one of the grounds for the claim that the system there has elements of apartheid. If it accepts the Levy approach, the government will no longer be able to answer this claim by arguing that the territory is subject to a temporary regime of belligerent occupation. Either Israel's government will have to acknowledge that apartheid is living and kicking, or it will have to extend political rights to all Palestinian residents of the West Bank.

Hebrew University - Hanan Hever (Head of Dept of Literature) Argues that "It Does Not Matter" Who's Responsible – Israel is Always Culpable

It is not important whether or not the Holocaust caused the establishment of the State of Israel. Neither is the fact that the State of Israel gave refuge to a substantial number of Holocaust survivors, rehabilitating them in buildings and towns that were, in essence, Palestinian ruins. It seems there can be no historical argument over this fact.

Because of this historical fact, which to this day allows the Holocaust to be used as a justification for the State of Israel's existence (even if it was not the cause of its establishment), Israel bears heavy responsibility.

And Israel's responsibility for the Nakba does not stop at the events of 1948. The Nakba, which is ongoing, is only getting worse – and for that, Israel is culpable.

It does not matter whether, in 1948, the Palestinians fled their homes or were driven from them. What matters is that when the dust settled, they were not allowed to return. Even if Israel's establishment is not connected to the Holocaust, Israel took in Jewish refugees while creating Palestinian ones. That that creates an undeniable connection between the Holocaust and the state's creation.

Defiles Israel on the Anniversary of the Six Day War

This year the apartheid regime of the State of the Jews proved its complete loyalty to racism and the principles of racism. Twenty-five racist bills were submitted and more than ten racist laws have been passed this year, and hardly any Jewish citizens went out onto the streets. More than three hundred people imprisoned without trial launched a hunger strike to the death for two months and more, and hardly any Jewish citizens went onto the streets. Thousands of children are not going to school in East Jerusalem because the Jewish ministry of education does not allocate classes or because the racist Citizenship Law makes them the citizens of no-place and no one is going onto the streets. The separation of families, the expulsion of residents, the confiscation of lands, children abducted from their beds and cruelly interrogated, families evicted from their homes out onto the street, farmers tortured by kippa-wearing bullies under the protection of the army and on the orders of the government - and hardly anyone goes out onto the streets. That is the peak achievement of the Zionist movement.

The State of Israel, which was officially declared as an apartheid state, is distinguished by what has always been the most typical and successful method of racism: the classification of human beings. The Hebrew language that keeps getting uglier under the auspices of the army of Occupation and the bureaucracy of Occupation, is full of classifications: there are people who are a cancer in the heart of the nation and there are people who are a security danger, and there are people who are a plague or a demographic nightmare and there are people who are a health risk, all of them classified and categorized in such a way that even the most ignorant and boorish of Israel's ministers manage to learn this categorization by heart.

She then falsely claims that Arab women were dispersed from their villages in 1948 during the misnamed "Nakba" as an intentional part of Israeli policy. The fact that the Arabs attempted to launch a genocidal war of destruction against the Jews is nowhere mentioned.

"Rape" accusations by Shaloub-Kevorkian are particularly vile. The irony is that an anti-Israel leftist graduate student at the Hebrew University wrote a thesis trying to prove that the well-known fact that Israeli soldiers never rape Arab women proves that the Jews are racists!

The first report, a supposed profile of Sharon, featured an interview with "peace activist" Amiram Goldblum, who was allowed to demonize Sharon as building a "career out of the politics and the culture of hatred," and looking at everything as a "battlefield where he has to conquer something." Ludden added to the vilification, telling listeners that Goldblum "considers Sharon's candidacy immoral, given his long military record," but she failed to disclose facts about her guest that might have lead reasonable listeners to question his judgement and credibility.

Omitted were details such as that Goldblum is an extreme leftist distant from the Israeli mainstream. Goldblum was repudiated even by his colleagues in the very dovish Peace Now movement after he explained away Saddam Hussein's Scud attacks and threats of annihilation as due only to Israel's alleged failure to make concessions to the Palestinians. In 1990, after a Palestinian stabbed and killed three Israelis in the Baka neighborhood of Jerusalem where Goldblum lives, even his own neighbors began to stone his house in frustration at what they saw as his outspokenly pro-PLO views. Her book, Palestine in Israeli School Books: Ideology and Propaganda in Education, is being translated into English, and presents findings from what she says are "years of research" showing Israel has portrayed Arabs as second-class people.

Peled-Elchanan says that she researched schoolbooks used in the Israeli school system between 1996 and 2009, and found, she said in an interview with the British Guardian, "dozens of examples of how children are prepared to justify war crimes in their army service."

Motivated mainly by fear of donor desertion, university authorities have attempted to downplay the scope of the phenomenon – trying to dismiss it as marginal in influence and negligible in size.

But it is not only what Israeli academics have failed to do that is of concern. What they have done is even more disturbing.

Many — some unwitting, others wittingly — have thrown their weight behind the burgeoning drive to delegitimize Israel internationally, particularly in intellectual circles across the globe.

Regrettably, frequent use — or rather abuse — is made of academic titles or positions to create an aura of authority on issues where none exists.

Take for example the good Prof. Shulman, who is listed at Renee Lang Professor of Humanistic Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. On his website he details his areas of academic expertise as the history of religion in South India, poetry/poetics in Tamil, Telugu and Sanskrit; Dravidian linguistics; and Carnatic music, none of which appears to have any relevance for the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Yet making use of his academic credentials, he blogs regularly in The New York Review of Books, vilifying Israel and validating much of the vitriol of its detractors.

Thus almost immediately following the IDF interception of the Mavi Marama in its attempt to break the naval quarantine of Gaza, he applied his expertise in South Asian culture to the realm of maritime law and national security.

...Such examples are far too numerous to catalog in this essay, but some will be dealt with in future columns, for this is an issue that has far too long been neglected.

A giant pall of shame
Israeli academe will have much to answer for to future generations. For despite its long list of illustrious accomplishments, a giant pall of shame and disgrace is beginning to rise above it — shame for what it has done; guilt for what it has not.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem yesterday announced it was dismissing a professor and permanently banning him from acting as an adviser to its students, after he was found to have had an improper relationship with three female students.

In February, the university's disciplinary tribunal suspended Prof. Eyal Ben-Ari for two years after it ruled he had acted in a manner "unbecoming a faculty member."

However, the university appealed the ruling, seeking a harsher finding. The tribunal found that that Ben-Ari, a senior lecturer in sociology and anthropology, had taken advantage of his position to have intimate relations with one of the students, and in suggesting to two others that they share a room when they were abroad together.

Before coming to [University of California, Berkeley] campus, visiting Israeli professor Gideon Aran reached a mediation agreement in June 2010 with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem regarding his relationship with a female student, an incident UC Berkeley officials said they were not aware of.

After student Ortal Ben-Dayan complained to a Hebrew University sexual harassment authority in 2008 about Aran - who is visiting UC Berkeley for only the spring semester and currently teaches two political science classes - a mediation agreement was reached, including over $10,000 in compensation to Ben-Dayan, and disciplinary proceedings were dropped, according to a Orit Sulitzeanu, a Hebrew University spokesperson.

Interim Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Faculty Welfare Angelica Stacy, who entered her current position in January, said that she had not heard of the mediation agreement and that to her knowledge, her predecessor Sheldon Zedeck had not heard of the agreement before Aran arrived on campus.

Isracampus Exclusive: Globes Newspaper exposed Dr. Gideon Aran's escapades three years ago; Hebrew University Officials might be involved in conspiracy to conceal wrong-doings on campus

The sex scandal involving Dr. Gideon Aran, a sociologist at the Hebrew University, was in fact first broken to the world by the Israeli business daily newspaper Globes on June 13, 2008, but without Aran's name. Aran is referred to there only as "'A' from the Department of Sociology." Those familiar with the department would have assumed that the A was referring to Hebrew University sociologist Eyal/Ayal (like Aran, spelled with a Hebrew Alef) Ben-Ari, whose name was already in the press with regard to alleged sexual harassment of his students. The Globes article later mentions that there were indeed two Professors named "A" or "ALEF" who were involved in sexually harassing female sociology students at the Hebrew University.

... In any case, we now know that the offending faculty member was indeed Gideon Aran. We also know from the Globes article that the entire story and the behavior of Aran were well-known to the Hebrew University authorities and faculty at least as far back as June 2008. And they did nothing at all about it. They swept the entire affair under the carpet until Haaretz decided to break it and name names this week!

Hebrew University - Uproar over Hush Money Paid to Silence Complaint of Sexual Harassment by Hebrew University sociologist Gideon Aran

In May of 2009, prior to the mediation proceedings, a university disciplinary tribunal issued an opinion stating: "The conduct to which the defendant [Aran] has admitted is unbecoming in the extreme, and when it is directed at a student, it is difficult to think of more serious conduct. The humiliation and harassment that characterize the defendant's ongoing conduct are intolerable in society in general, but their seriousness is much graver in the setting of an academic institution."

The opinion also noted that, beyond the violation itself, the instance constituted exploitation of Aran's status and authority as a teacher.

Orit Kamir, a legal scholar specializing in sexual harassment law, said the university's contention that relations between Ben-Dayan and Aran were consensual and therefore do not constitute sexual harassment is ill-founded in light of the university disciplinary tribunal's finding that Aran exploited his status and authority as a teacher.

Hebrew University - IDI Honchos come out against a Pledge of Loyalty in Israel

According to Hebrew University professor and Israel Democracy Institute deputy president Mordechai Kremnitzer, most laws are meant to solve problems.

"This law is unique in the sense that it creates problems," he said.

He started out with the premise that the bill would not affect Palestinians seeking to marry Israelis and move to Israel, because family reunification was already blocked by another law.

As for other foreigners, he continued, "There is no phenomenon of a new Israeli who proved disloyal to the state after becoming a citizen. Therefore, there is no problem that needs solving."

The bill's real target is the Israeli Arabs, Kremnitzer charged. He quoted a statement made earlier Thursday by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, whose party sponsored a far more sweeping bill.

Lieberman, said Kremnitzer, did not refer to new citizens in the context of the proposed new pledge but to Israeli Arab MK Haneen Zoabi (Balad).

"The idea is tell us all, 'Look, these citizens are not really loyal to Israel, because if they were forced to make a pledge, they would refuse.' The bill is meant to cast a shadow on the loyalty of the Israeli Arabs."

Hebrew University – The Department of Philosophy Sacks Anti-NIF Lecturer

Hebrew University lecturer Dr. Ran Baratz, a highly respected and very popular lecturer in the university's Department of Philosophy, was recently informed that he would not be employed at the institution in the next academic year. 150 students from all parts of the political spectrum have signed a petition calling on the university to reconsider its decision and keep Baratz on its staff, and 50 of them sent letters to the same effect.

Israeli opposition to the Goldstone report reflects multiple layers of denial, ranging from literal denial (it never happened) through denial of its significance (these weren't really war crimes) to justification (we had no alternative; what can we do when they shell Sderot nonstop?). There is also denial of the possibility that an international commission might be able to investigate better than the Israel Defense Forces (they're anti-Semites), denial of the existence of any international law that would also be valid in Gaza (awful things always happen in wars, and our situation is unique), denial of the pictures that were seen worldwide, but not in Israel (Al Jazeera is spreading propaganda), and denial of the possibility that there is another way besides the way of war.

Hebrew University – Jeffrey Goldberg, the world renown reporter, dings Bernard Avishai who wants the the law of return repealed [putting an end to the Jewish Safe-Haven] in his book “The Tragedy of Zionism”

On the more important question of Zionism and anti-Zionism, all I think I need to say is this: Avishai, the author of a book called "The Tragedy of Zionism," believes that Israel's Law of Return should be repealed. This is the law that grants Jews anywhere in the world to claim citizenship in the newly-reconstituted Jewish state, which was meant to be a refuge for persecuted Jews. The law is the raison d'etre of Zionism, and of Israel's existence. I don't think I was being "vicious" in pointing out that Avishai's conception of what Israel should be is very different from the mainstream Zionist position. By the way, J Street's position, as officially enunciated by its head flack to me, is that the group's core mission is to preserve Israel as a "Jewish democracy." Though maybe I should ask J Street if it believes the Law of Return as currently written and implemented is undemocratic.

In the most recent issue of “Social Research,” Galnoor publishes an article entitled, “Academic Freedom under Duress: Israel.” In large part it is an ideological attack against the exercise of freedom of speech by critics of Israel’s tenured radicals and its far-leftist anti-Israel faculty members. Galnoor evidently thinks such people should be exempt from public and private criticism. Expressing criticism and denunciations of the anti-Israel political activities of such radicals is itself an intolerable assault against academic freedom, insists Galnoor in his article. Academic freedom should be defended for those who attack Israel and seek its destruction, but not for anyone criticizing such people or questioning their motives. … But Galnoor is part of a new movement in Israeli academia, one insisting that it is anti-democratic to cite verbatim what anti-Israel radical faculty members say or to cite news stories in the mainstream media about the public political activities of anti-Israel radical academics. … Itzhak Galnoor is alarmed that the leftist hegemony over so many departments at Israeli universities is being publicized, scrutinized and challenged these days. Galnoor is himself anti-democratic, someone whose real fear is that non-leftists might actually come to enjoy freedom of speech in Israel and - Heavens to Betsy - perhaps even on Israeli campuses. Here, too, everything is clear: The responsibility lay not with the junior and intermediate command levels, but rather with those who shaped the new combat norms and approved them. Therefore, the entire problem is first and foremost a moral one, and the Israeli political elite cannot evade taking responsibility for it. The Goldstone report was inevitable. … The bottom line is that Operation Cast Lead has contributed another brick to the wall of delegitimization that is gradually closing in on the Jewish state. Even if no Israeli is brought to court in The Hague in the near future, the moral stain will not be erased and the repercussions are yet to be seen.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It grieves me terribly, as a Jew, an alum of Hebrew U's foreign students program (1971-72), and as a sentient human being with the ability to reason, that Hebrew U., that once great university, employs the likes of Nurit Peled-Elhanan and gives her a platform for her hateful, traitorous, libelous, dangerous rantings in support of the "poor Palestinians" who would murder her in a second if they could. I learned of this unspeakable calumny from Maariv, where Mr. Yemini exposes the anti-Semitism and betrayal for what it is.

It is nothing short of an outrage that people like Elhanan-Peled are employed using the funds of Israeli taxpayers, alumni, and overseas donors. (I was once not only a generous donor but also executive director of a young-leadership group for the American Friends in Los Angeles.) I demand, on behalf of the Jews who are dead and cannot speak for themselves, thanks to the murderers so encouraged and supported by such scum "professors", and on behalf of the living Jews who hope not to meet the fate that Peled-Elhanan apparently invites upon us, that the Hebrew University take action against the pro-terror anti-Semites on its faculty (of whom Elhanan-Peled is not the only one).

Hebrew U. will never see another dime of my or my family's money or other support as long as this kind of outrage persists. On the contrary, it will become my mission to expose the university's inexplicable, unexcusable giving aid and comfort to the enemy that, given half a chance to sneak a bomb onto campus, would gladly incinerate all of you along with the institution--as, indeed, they did somewhat successfully on Har Hatzofim some years back.

Bad Manners at the Hebrew University

At the beginning of the ceremony, the public was asked to stand for Hatikvah, the national anthem. While the audience was singing, I turned around and saw something incongruous. Several rows behind me, sat a group of students who by their body language and defiant looks communicated that they chose to distance themselves from the public. These were Arab students. ...The first logical question to ask is: what message did these individuals wish to convey? Basically, there are two levels of meaning. First of all, they publicly expressed their contempt for a national symbol, in this case, the national anthem Hatikvah. Secondly, they openly demonstrated their contempt for the general public whose feelings they were bound to offend. It was a calculated affront. It is not that these people did not know how to behave; through their actions they chose to transmit a provocative and hostile message to their hosts and to the audience. ... People who behave offensively have no place in good company. They belong on the street. ... there is simply no justification for crude and illmannered behavior.

Hebrew University - Professor Mordechai Kremnitzer (Dept of Law) Seeks to Disarm Israel

In a recent op-ed, Kremnitzer condemned a Knesset bill to exempt Israel from paying damage claims to Palestinians harmed during hostilities. This issue is indeed clear-cut: no army can operate under the expectation of a flood of lawsuits against its officers and soldiers. ... One doesn’t have to be a military or legal expert, though, to imagine the effectiveness of an army hamstrung by fears of mass litigation.

But considering Prof. Kremnitzer’s positions on Mordechai Vanunu’s acts, the interrogation of terror suspects, targeted killings of terror masters, and home demolitions, it’s no surprise this Knesset bill wasn’t to his liking.

Hebrew University - Eyal Ben Ari (Dept of Sociology) uses the banner of Feminism to cover up alleged rape

But the most disturbing part of the entire story is the way Feminism hangs over it. Ben-Ari and Nitzan were believers in the fact that the Israeli military, and military in general, is a patriarchal, chauvinistic negative culture. This culture is in direct contrast to the enlightened and progressive culture found at the university. Nefarious Cover Up at the Hebrew University!!!

The women who were abused, molested and raped by the good professor (Eyal Ben-Ari), a leading member of the Tenured Left at the Hebrew University, had filed detailed complaints about him to Hebrew University campus authorities. In a long expose in Maariv today (August 1), alas – not on their web site, the paper reproduces a letter that was sent to the Dean of Social Sciences at the Hebrew University. Hebrew U Professor who Thinks Non-Rape is Racism Gets Busted for Rape

The "Non-Rape as Racism" thesis was co-supervised by one Eyal Ben-Ari, a Hebrew University professor of sociology, who claims to know something about the sociology of the military. Ben-Ari is a far-leftist with a track record of turning out anti-Israel propaganda, such as claims that Israel is an ultra-militarist society, and much of his propaganda is misrepresented as scholarly research. The other co-supervisor of the rape thesis was Ben-Ari's co-author in a book about Israeli "militarism." Israeli feminist groups never had a word to say about that "thesis" nor about Ben-Ari's role in inventing the "No rape as Racism" hypothesis.

From his role in the rape thesis, it was already known that Ben-Ari had goofy ideas about sexual (mis)behavior. But now it turns out that the ultra-feminist Israel-bashing professor of sociology practices what he preaches.

The very same Professor Eyal Ben-Ari was arrested yesterday for suspected rape and sexual abuse of his students, and arraigned before the Jerusalem magistrate's court.

Hebrew University - Did Baruch Kimmerling illustrate the stupidity of the intelligentsia or was he just plain evil and self-serving?

There is a particular cultural malady amongst many Israeli “sociologists” and “political scientists” that allows them to postulate in a vacuum free of the reality on the ground for the average Israeli. Being a PhD and college professor, particularly with tenure, spending time abroad in the safety of the US or Canada and being a discussant in a university setting with Arab intellectuals and professors who will patiently sit and sophistically discuss the need to end the Jewish state as a means to some egalitarian utopian society (that in reality will never exist in peace and calm in the midst of a Muslim-Arab umma) must be a great life. Meanwhile, the average Israeli has to worry about his children getting blown up as he works and earns about $18,000 a year and does his six weeks of reserve duty to protect the Jewish people from an Arab culture that has reintroduced child sacrifice, that perpetuates misogyny, honor killings, homophobia and promotes, above all, the murder of Jews as not only a noble pursuit, but even a Godly one. The late Professor Baruch Kimmerling referred to this Arab culture in euphemistic terms as simply “Palestinian nationalism” deserving of the world’s respect. Goebbels’ Big Lie showed how repetition gives validity to a lie; Israeli intellectuals like Kimmerling did more than the Big Lie ever could to demonize the Jewish right to self-determination by legitimizing the myth of a Palestinian nationalism that was fabricated from whole cloth by the Arab League. Kimmerling may now be dead, but his ideas and statements are still alive to be used by the Arabs.

Hebrew University - Alice Shalvi (Dept. of English) tries to "deceive" American Donors

Just this week, the New Israel Fund (NIF) sent out an email solicitation for donors with a personal plea and letter from Professor Alice Shalvi of Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Shalvi, who is a Professor of English and an expert on Shakespeare, was recently awarded the Israel Prize. Some have suggested she won the national honor because of leftist political pressure to give it to a woman who is a feminist activist. Regardless of why she won the Prize, apparently the New Israel Fund thought she was an effective (and deceptive) enough personality to use for an email solicitation for donations from wealthy American Jews who don’t know all that much about the New Israel Fund, or Alice Shalvi for that matter.

The New Israel Fund tries to pass itself off as an organization that seeks to make Israel a better place to live and a prosperous society. Currently managed by a former US State Department hack named Larry Garber, who handled USAID funds for anti-Israel organizations and NGO’s and even paid with USAID funds  for a Palestinian constitution based on Sharia Law like those of Saudi Arabia and Iran, the NIF can never find enough organizations to aid that seek to give aid and comfort to Israel’s enemies. For example, the NIF has funded one subsidiary that paid activists to hand out flyers at train stations in Israel encouraging IDF soldiers to desert the IDF and offering to pay them salaries while they sit in jail (most IDF soldiers do not receive pay while serving their required national service). The NIF is in fact a fundraising arm for every “Jewish” group that works in nearly full cooperation with Arab entities out to destroy the Jewish state, all the while using the trite “social justice” mantra of “fighting oppression” used by communist-inspired and frequently Arab-led groups worldwide like the International Solidarity Movement.

Hebrew University - Moshe Behar (Dept of Politics) ignores the facts

Behar drafted a letter to every Jew in the world that wants to see Israel ended as a Jewish nation in which he calls for "a clear call of a halt to all American and other aid to Israel" and implementation of UN Resolution 242 that he says "emphasized the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by force" and "affirmed the principle of withdrawal of Israeli forces from territories occupied in the recent [1967] conflict."

Middle East historian Bat Y'eor in her book, Eurabia, has described how the Arabs continually misquote the intention of Resolution 242 insisting it says Israel must withdraw from all the territories and give it to the Arabs. But Eugene Rostow, who wrote the Resolution for the UN, says it says Israel must withdraw from part of the territory in return for secure borders. Those two issues never come into play for an Arab League that insists international law be followed only when they agree with it. There were 23 Jewish settlements in Gaza and Judea and Samaria (The West Bank) prior to 1948 that Arab armies destroyed that Israel took back in 1967. Israel already gave back Gaza by deporting its own people and giving up 70% of its agricultural export business and we all know the outcome of that: over 4,000 rockets fired on Sderot and environs immediately. Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) has a legitimate right to hold onto parts of the land regained by what could be called an attempted Arab pogrom to run the Jews into the sea in 1948. Since Behar teaches in Sderot, he of all people should logically see the folly of acceding to the Arab demands in Judea and Samaria. But logic plays no role in the careers and vocalizations of "intellectuals" like Behar who work diligently on behalf of the Arabs and enjoy fellowship sponsorship at Hebrew University, courtesy of the Israeli taxpayer.

Behar also says the world should condemn and boycott Israel over implementation of UN Resolution 338 that calls for a unilateral ceasefire, but the it is the Arab world that maintains a constant state of war since Khartoum in 1967 where the Arab League announced the three no's: no negotiation, no peace, no Israel. Saudi Arabia, allowed to dictate a "peace plan" called the Road Map, is still in a declared state of war with Israel since 1948.

Apparently, none of these facts bother Behar, especially since they do not fit the Palestinian Arab narrative. He found his academic niche as a mouthpiece for the Arabs and even now Israel will give him a sounding board at Hebrew University.

Hebrew University - Sidra DeKoven Ezrachi (Dept of Literature) tries "to justify" a non-Jewish Israeli State

… this reactionary idea of Israel as the embodiment of Jewish religious exceptionalism is making more and more sense to Israel’s Arabs, who otherwise have sought to integrate into Hebrew civil society. When West Bank settlers say, absurdly, that if Jews have no claim to Hebron then they have none to Tel Aviv, Israeli Arabs increasingly agree. No Tel Aviv, they say, or at least no Jewish state.

Rather, Israeli Arabs are coming around to the idea of a single state “for all religions.” (Presumably, public business would be conducted in a nicely accented English.) The Arab world more generally has assumed what the settlers imply, that Judaism is a religion disdained in the Christian West, which imposed Israel on Palestine because of guilt. The occupation, both groups allege, has betrayed Israel’s true nature as an expanding religious colony. The idea that modern Jews need a democratic national home — to transcend their religious Orthodoxy and develop their cultural distinction — seems radical all over again.

Hebrew University - Sternhell and the Debasement of the Israel Prize

He called on IDF tanks to roll over the settlements, he advised the Palestinians to direct their armed Intifada east of the green line, he maintains that killing Arab children becomes part of national policy, he condemns Israel's "barbaric behavior" in the territories, he branded Israeli ministers as "stupid", "megalomaniac", "trigger-happy gangsters, he opposed Israel's right to fight terrorism and does not even think that he lives in a democracy. Yet, this nightmarish country will award Prof. Ze'ev Sternhell its most prestigious prize on Independence Day and he has the audacity to accept it.

Hebrew University - Zeev Sternhell (Dept. of Politics), Israel Prize 2008 nominee, legitimized Arab terrorism

In his article, “Against the Moonstruck Government” (Haaretz, May 11, 2001) Sternhell legitimized Arab terrorism in Judea and Samaria:

"Many Israelis, possibly the majority of the voters, do not doubt the legitimacy of the armed resistance in the territories proper. Had the Palestinians the least bit of sense, they would have concentrated their struggle against the settlements and would not hurt women and children, fire rockets on Gilo, Nachal Oz, and Sderot, or plant explosives on the western side of the Green Line. In this manner, the Palestinians would themselves draft the solution that will be reached in any case."

Several years earlier, in Davar, Sternhell said that “only those willing to storm Ofra with tanks, will be able to stop the fascist wave threatening to drown the Israeli democracy.”

"The Israel Prize turns its recipients into objects of national pride and consensus. The prize is awarded in the name of all the Israeli citizens, including those, whom professor Sternhell views as legitimate targets for terrorism," the Forum stated.

Hebrew University - Zeev Sternhell (Dept. of Politics), Israel Prize 2008 nominee, justified the killing of settlers

The Supreme Court will deliberate Monday a petition calling for the revocation of the decision to bestow the Israel Prize on Professor Ze'ev Sternhell. Members of the Legal Forum for the Land of Israel, which submitted the request, claimed that Sternhell had publicly legitimized Palestinian terrorism in an article he once published and suggested that the terrorists target settlers.

In February, Education minister Yuli Tamir rejected a request by the Legal Forum for the Land of Israel to cancel the decision to award Sternhell the prize. The request had stated that "There is no case more appropriate than Professor Sternhell's, which justifies the killing of civilians in terror attacks, provided that they are settlers."

Hebrew University - Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian (Faculty of Law) links "honor killings" to imaginary rapes by Israeli soldiers

At first view, Shalhoub-Kevorkian would seem to be a prime example of equal rights for  Israeli Arab citizens within Israel, particularly women. This woman is a product of education from at least two Israeli universities (and how much Israeli taxpayer assistance did she receive to do so?) and now lectures on the consistent problem worldwide of violence against women, not only in Israel, but abroad. The greatest proportion of such violence and oppression is in Arab Muslim states.  One would expect her to perhaps have some gratitude for her country-of-residence, Israel, at least  some minor appreciation, but as in many other aspects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Ms. Shalhoub-Kevorkian lets Arab tribalism trump everything.

Hebrew University, where Ms. Shalhoub-Kevorkian teaches, and particularly its social work department, recently came out with a study that faulted Israeli soldiers for not raping Palestinian women as an indication that IDF soldiers felt such women were inferior. That was the best the academics at Hebrew U. could do to salvage such a blood libel report which proved false since no such rapes could be found. Not to miss the bandwagon, Ms. Shalhoub-Kevorkian advanced this blood libel against IDF soldiers by claiming they molest Palestinian girls at checkpoints as a matter of course and even rape them (still unproven with not one rape chronicled). The kicker is that as an academic and a feminist, she says is opposed to Arab honor killings.

So how does this Arab-Israeli academic lay blame on Israel for that peculiar Arab tribal institution of honor killings? Well, Shalhoub-Kevorkian hit upon the idea that Israeli soldiers are raping these Arab girls who are then murdered by their families to preserve family honor because of the imaginary rapes by Israeli soldiers.

Hebrew University - Nurit Peled-Elhanan (Dept. of Education) calls into question the Jewish Israeli identity

Israel is an ‘ethnic Democracy’ where one ethnic group dominates other ethnic groups while denying or ignoring their social and cultural identities and rights. The Jewish Israeli identity is an artificial one. Since features such as common territory, common language and common culture were not available to the modern Jewish nation which is composed of many cultures and languages, they had to be manufactured through education, for the purpose of building a collective homogenous identity for all its members. This identity has been founded on the idea that Israelis are both the successors of biblical Hebrews and have a Western culture. Israeli school discourse ignores and denies any other culture, both Jewish and Arab. This tendency results in the ignorance of teachers regarding the culture and ‘lifeworld’ of both their students and their neighbours. The paper shows the ways in which ‘others’ (such as Palestinians, Ethiopian Jews or ex-Soviet Union Jews), are represented both in schoolbooks and in teachers’ talk. The paper will argue that Israeli education promotes ‘Elite Racism’ both towards the Palestinian citizens and subjects and towards Jewish new-comers.

Hebrew U's Timothy Leary Says Moses was a Druggie!

Shanon is a chaired full professor at the Hebrew University who holds the Mandel Chair in Cognitive Psychology and Education. He is author of the 2002 book Antipodes of the "Mind: Charting the Phenomenology of the Ayahuasca Experience," published by Oxford University Press.

Shanon reached this astounding serendipity on the basis of the "seeing the Sounds" phrase amidst the descriptions in Exodus of the sounds and smoke around Mt. Sinai at the giving of the Ten Commandments (or reserved recommendations, for those of you who are Reconstructionists). It all reminds him the experiences he had taking hallucinegenic drugs while trekking through the Amazon. No, not the book selling web site. Hebrew University - Israel Prize Winner Zeev Sternhell (Dept. of Political Science) wants Israeli sovereignty to be destroyed via an "imposed solution":

Sternhell wrote in the Davar newspaper in 1988: "In the end we will have to use force against the settlers in Ofra or Elon Moreh. Only he who is willing to storm Ofra with tanks will be able to block the fascist danger threatening to drown Israeli democracy."

The Legacy of Israel Shahak

In the late Israel Shahak, the political heirs of Heinrich Himmler discovered their very own A-1 Jew. They elevated him to that status over three decades, while he served on the faculty of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

 Israel Shahak was a professor of organic chemistry. In his spare time he was a disseminator of antisemitic lies. Almost every falsehood invoked by the Nazis to justify the Holocaust was eventually ratified by this tenured academic at one of Israel’s most prestigious institutions.

He went on to become a professor of organic chemistry (he taught at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University for 25 years), but it was as a so-called human rights activist that he made a name for himself.

This, however, was no garden variety bleeding-heart leftist. Shahak not only came to despise Zionism and consider the establishment of the State of Israel a criminal act; he also set out to expose what he considered the depravities and hypocrisies of rabbinic Judaism – and to do so in as public a manner as possible.

Because he downplayed Jewish suffering in favor of painting Jews and Israelis as serial oppressors, Shahak had little patience with the notion that the Holocaust had a profound impact on either the Israeli psyche or Israeli policy-making. To him, Jews were victimizers, not victims.

Nurit Peled-Elhanan's study about the presentation of the Palestinians in Israeli schoolbooks

The denial of Palestinian national and territorial identity is still one of the core messages of Israeli textbooks. In a recent study of Israeli textbooks Firer (2004:75) claims that "as political correctness has reached Israel it is no longer appropriate to use blunt, discriminatory language in textbooks", and then adds that in the years 1967-1990 "the stereotypes of Arabs and Palestinians almost disappear" (ibid. p. 92). However, examining mainstream school books that were published after 1994, including the ones Firer praises most for political correctness, one cannot avoid seeing that visually and verbally, Palestinians are still represented either in a racist stereotypical way, or as absent people, namely as an 'impersonalized' or excluded element.

The Palestinian citizens of the state of Israel are always depicted dichotomously as "Israel' Arabs" vs. the Israelis, or as the "Non-Jewish population" vs. the Jewish one.
